Seborrheic dermatitis occurs where there are a great number of oil-producing glands, such as the upper back, nose, and scalp. While anyone can develop this noninfectious condition at any age, it most commonly affects adults between the ages of thirty and sixty, as well as infants less than three months old.

Those with certain diseases that affect the immune system and the nervous system are at a higher risk for developing seborrheic dermatitis. It can also affect those who have epilepsy, alcoholism, acne, rosacea and mental health issues.

Common triggers can include, but are not limited to, the following:

-Stress

-Hormonal changes

-Illness

-Harsh detergents

-Solvents

-Chemicals

-Soaps

-Cold/dry weather

-Medications (i.e. psoralen, interferon, lithium)

Symptoms can include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

-Redness

-Greasy/swollen skin

-White/yellowish crusty flakes

-Burning

-Pinkish patches
