Also commonly known as discoid eczema and nummular dermatitis, nummular eczema looks very different from other types of eczema and can be difficult to treat due to each case’s uniqueness. The cause of this condition is unknown to doctors, but it is not thought to be hereditary.
Some triggers can include, but are not limited to, the following:
-Skin damage (i.e. insect bite, scrapes, scratches, chemical “burns”)
-A reaction to inflammation (as with atopic dermatitis and/or stasis dermatitis)
-Dry skin
-Metals (i.e. nickel)
-Poor blood flow
-Swelling in the lower legs
-Medications, including topical antibiotic creams, isotretinoin, and interferon
