With more than 30 million Americans having it, atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema for both children and adults. The inflammation often appears as a red, itchy rash typically on the cheeks, arms and legs. Atopic dermatitis is more likely to coexist with two other specific conditions: asthma and allergic rhinitis. The condition is not contagious, and if you scratch too much, it could cause a flare up.
Some sensitivities that can cause a flare can include:
-Easily irritated, dry skin
-Occupational skin diseases (i.e. hand dermatitis)
-Skin infections (i.e. Staph, herpes)
-Eye problems (i.e. eyelid dermatitis, cataracts)
While random eczema flares are not fully preventable, there are still minor steps one can take to try and reduce the extremity of their symptoms:
-Be aware of your body’s triggers
-Have a regulatory bathing/moisturizing routine
-Use medication consistently, as prescribed
-Watch for signs of infection on your skin (i.e. pain, heat, pus-filled blisters)
