An alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is a fairly rare and inherited disorder that could cause lung disease and liver disease. Symptoms typically develop between the ages of twenty and fifty. Some symptoms can include: shortness of breath, excessive wheezing, unintentional weight loss, recurring respiratory infections, fatigue, and rapid heartbeat after standing. Those affected can sometimes also develop emphysema, liver disease, liver damage (cirrhosis), panniculitis (skin condition) and a type of liver cancer called hepatocellular carcinoma.
