Dust mites are a common trigger for those who suffer from allergies and/or asthma. They are too small to see with your eyes alone. There are at least thirteen different species of mites, and they feed mainly on shedded, tiny flakes of human skin. These flakes are often deeply embedded in one’s furniture, carpets, bedding, and more.
If your asthma is also triggered, you may also have:
-Difficulty breathing
-Chest tightness/pain
-Wheezing
Consult your allergist or primary doctor about the possible testing and treatment methods that would best help you.
As is common in many homes, most places in your household are likely to contain dust mites. Follow these steps to reduce your risk in your own home:
-Use zippered dust-proof covers on mattresses and pillows.
-Wash bedding at least once a week.
-Use a filtering mask when dusting or vacuuming; drug stores often carry these.
-Wash rugs in hot water whenever possible.
-Use a dehumidifier and/or an air conditioner when possible.
