Allergy desensitization is a form of immunotherapy that employs the concept that one’s immune system is able to be desensitized to specific allergens overtime.
Allergy shots, specifically, work similar to a vaccine, in that the body responds to the injection of a particular allergen and eventually develops a resistance and tolerance to it. Allergy shots can lead to decreased, minimal or no allergy symptoms.
The two basic phases of the shot process are to build up a tolerance and to find a maintenance point. Building tolerance involves receiving shots with increasing doses of the allergens; shots are typically given once or twice a week. The maintenance phase begins when the most effective dose is found. This dosage varies individually.
Allergy shots are often well-suited for those who suffer from allergic rhinitis, asthma, allergic conjunctivitis, or a stinging-insect allergy. Allergy shots are not recommended for those with food allergies.
