🏠Controlling Your Environment to Reduce Allergens

Reducing exposure to allergens like pollen, mold, dust mites, and pet dander can significantly improve symptoms and reduce the need for medication.

🐾 Animals (Pet Dander)

DO AVOID
Keep pets out of the bedroom and off fabric furniture Letting pets sleep in beds or on soft furnishings
Bathe/groom pets regularly Skipping pet cleaning, especially after outdoor exposure
Use HEPA air purifiers in pet-heavy rooms Assuming pet dander won’t spread if the pet is only in certain rooms
Wipe pets’ feet & legs after being outside Bringing outdoor allergens indoors with pets

💡 Best long-term solution: Consider allergy shots (immunotherapy) for pet allergies.

🛏️ Dust Mites

DO AVOID
Use zippered allergen-proof covers on mattresses and pillows Using regular bedding without encasements
Wash sheets/blankets weekly in hot water (140°F) Letting bedding go unwashed for long periods
Keep humidity below 45% (use A/C or dehumidifier) High humidity environments—check with a humidity gauge
Vacuum frequently, especially soft surfaces Shampooing carpets (not effective for dust mites)
Freeze or hot dry stuffed animals Letting stuffed toys sit uncleaned

🌼 Pollen

  • Keep windows closed during pollen season
  • Best times to go outside: Cool, damp, low-wind days
  • Worst times: Dry, hot, and windy days (esp. late morning to early afternoon)
  • Remove outdoor clothes before lying on beds
  • Wipe pets after outdoor exposure
  • Use pollen count websites like:

🌫️ Mold

DO AVOID
Remove moldy items from the home Keeping damp items/clothing
Clean bathrooms/tile often with anti-mold agents Letting mold build in grout or corners
Use mildew-resistant paint or mix in mildewcide Painting over mold without treatment
Keep plants to a minimum or use mold-free soil Indoor plants with constantly moist soil
Dehumidify damp areas Allowing excess humidity indoors

Effective mold cleaners:
Captan (Orthofungicide), Zephiran, Lysol spray, Clorox

🌬️ Air Filtration

  • Whole-house air filtration is best. Use the highest grade filter your system can handle.
  • Set the fan to “on” (not “auto”) for continuous air cleaning.
  • Replace filters regularly to keep filtration efficient.

Stand-Alone Air Purifiers:

Type Pros Cons
Disposable filter Lower cost up front Ongoing filter purchases
Washable/reusable filter Long-term savings Higher initial cost
Ozone-producing units Often minimal effect May irritate lungs (check specs)

🔒 For best use: Keep windows and room doors closed while running.
